Sull’idea di «Chiesa sinodale» si sono concentrate grandi aspettative, anche per il suo abbinamento con il tema della riforma della Chiesa cattolica. Questo contributo intende affrontare i principali problemi teologici e canonistici sollevati da tale concetto. L’analisi si articola in rapporto ai vari aspetti costitutivi della sinodalità, quali la definizione, la fondazione teologica, le questioni metodologiche più rilevanti: la rappresentanza e il discernimento ecclesiale. Vengono poi trattati gli equivoci dell’equiparazione della «Chiesa sinodale» con la «Chiesa conciliare», e della sinodalità come proprietà essenziale e modello di Chiesa. Da ultimo, si offrono elementi per individuare due miti che ispirano diversi teologi della sinodalità: il ritorno alla «Ecclesia primitiva» e al «Consensus Ecclesiae».

Great expectations have been placed on the idea of the ‘Synodal Church’, not least because of its association with the theme of reform of the Catholic Church. This paper aims to address the main theological and canonical issues raised by this concept. The analysis is articulated in relation to the various constitutive aspects of synodality, such as its definition, its theological foundation, the most important methodological questions: ecclesial representation and discernment. Then the misunderstandings of equating the ‘Synodal Church’ with the ‘Conciliar Church’ and of synodality as an essential characteristic and model of the Church are addressed. Finally, elements are offered to identify two myths that inspire various theologians of synodality: the return to the ‘Ecclesia primitiva’ and the ‘Consensus Ecclesiae’.
